Cloud Computing

Love it Hate it

If the terminology’s hot off the press, the idea behind it has been around quite a while, albeit with a certain lack of clear definition. But whilst the tech-minded have leapt with delight on the concept, die-hards have stepped equally rapidly in the opposite direction, with a list of reasons it’s not for us, as long as your arm.

Computer Superpower on your desk

The fors, of course, instantly take on board and appreciate the benefits of putting what is effectively computer superpower on their desks whilst the againsts mutter darkly about security issues.

Safe as houses

Security of and access to data is, and always has been a major issue for any business. But data is only ever as safe as the computer or CD it’s on. Unfortunately, as many of us know to our cost, computers can be stolen or have nervous breakdowns, cd’s can become corrupted or misplaced and fire, flood (or ash clouds) can and do turn life upside down with no warning. It therefore starts to make rather sound common sense not only to have everything off-site, but accessible 24/7 from any computer and from any location.

Runs like a dream

With IT processes stored with an external supplier, it’s this service provider’s business to offer a set of resources such as CPU (central processing unit), power, memory and storage on a large scale. And because it’s the service provider’s business to do this well, It’s obviously also in their interests to make sure it’s continually upgraded, secure as Fort Knox, and running as smooth as silk. If they don’t keep the service on offer as good as it gets, businesses will up and off, taking themselves and their data elsewhere.

Isn’t all this starting to sound rather less Cloud Cuckoo and more just plain Common Sense?
